last night i was a vampire

4:46pm – The sun is almost set.

The odd thing about cities is that it never really gets dark.

If I could be a vampire, I probably would. When everything is enveloped in darkness, times takes on an ethereal quality, culminating in nonexistence. How can time be measured if there is nothing against which to measure its progress?

I wouldn’t be a vampire because I like to kill people or because I like to drink blood or because I hate the sun. I would be a vampire because the thought feeds the romantic need in me to shun time and find myself lost in a solitary world without measurable boundaries. If boundaries are not measurable they cannot effectively exist as boundaries, thus the rules of life cannot effectively apply.

9:30pm – I leave my apartment, wondering if the knee high trouser socks will keep my legs warm enough that they don’t itch if I get goosebumps while I wait for my bus. In 20 minutes I’ll have bigger concerns on my mind.

9:50pm – My bus is late. My legs are indeed cold. I am not thinking about goosebumps. I am far more concerned with the overly friendly homeless man who wants to know if I talk to people like him.

What does that mean? Black people? Males? Homeless people? Please, sir, tell me how you classify yourself and I will tell you if I talk to people like you.

Scratch that. Regardless of how you classify yourself, I do talk to people like you. Right now, in the dark, at an otherwise empty bus stop downtown, though, I definitely don’t want to talk to you, specifically. Is is just me or are the homeless in Seattle the only people not affected by the Seattle Freeze?

10:17pm - $5 cover charge is paid after walking 4 blocks in the wrong direction from the bus stop I almost missed. Funny enough, arriving alone to the show makes me feel more like the only human in a room full of vampires than the vampire I set out to be tonight.

I won’t be paranoid. Everyone else in the room is just as ego centric as I am. They wouldn’t have a spare thought to lend to the fact that I came here alone and I don’t want to drink or socialize. The rules don’t apply to me tonight.

10:25pm – The girl on stage is beautiful. I’ve decided to occupy my hand and thoughts with a pen and my moleskine rather than a drink and a conversation.

Moleskine Poet excerpt

11:33pm – The last band takes the stage. This is what I came to see.

One and a half pages filled with illegible fragments.

Short Skirts excerpt

12:30am – The band finishes. I’ve been spotted, beckoned, invited to converse. What was I writing? He wants to know. I made him forget the lyrics. He says. I become suddenly aware that time does indeed still exist for other people. The band did play for everyone else at the bar. And though I may not be the only egocentric person in the room, I did not go unnoticed.

If boundaries are not measurable they cannot effectively exist as boundaries, thus the rules of life cannot effectively apply. Except that they do apply, and I am not actually a vampire.

Tim Burton excerpt

  1. A bit excited about vampires this Fall? You should just bite everyone on the bus to avoid conversations. Or next time just respond “No I just blog.”

  3. This makes me want to add a white base layer and even more eyeliner. Oh well… I guess I’ll have to make do with the entry level amount of silk and velvet.

That Tim Burton line cracked me up!

  4. @antman – I’m definitely stealing the ‘No, I just blog’ line. Love it!

@colin – Le sigh. So true. I keep trying to be cool.

@andrew – That line was a big hit all around from people I talked to about Seattle! Also, you would look so hot with eyeliner on your boat. Like a sailing mime. Yes. Do it.
